What is the bartender tip for a Mint Julep?
The IBA uses powdered sugar and a little water in the glass; 1:1 syrup works at home and dissolves better. Mint gets slapped, not pounded: shredding it releases bitter chlorophyll. Bourbon is the base — rye comes out too dry in this julep. Crushed ice is the drink: whole cubes barely dilute and the glass won't frost. Sip close to the sprig: the mint aroma is half the experience. The catalog's Mojito is still the rum cousin with lime and soda; here there's no citrus and no fizz.
